Purpose of the blog…

This page is to encourage and educate young people, aquaculture enthusiats and fish hobbist to see reasons, how and why to practice aquaculture and its significance to the worlds sustainable development. It will educate in terms of displaying relevant links and pictures. It also serve as marketing point where we showcase and display some agricultural products. It will give updates on fish sales in general. Everyone is allowed to make comments. Also, we shall give information about #TheFishRepublic# and the upcoming progress.

Do you know kaolin clay cures columnaris infection in channel catfish (I. punctatus) Ask me how…

Kaolin is a type of clay found in nature. It can also be made in a laboratory. People use it to make medicine.
Kaolin is used for mild-to-moderate diarrhea, severe diarrhea (dysentery),and cholera .
In combination products, kaolin is used to treat diarrhea and to relieve soreness and swelling inside the mouth caused by radiation treatments. Some of these combination products are used for treating ulcers and swelling (inflammation) in the large intestine (chronic ulcerative colitis).
Some people apply kaolin directly to the skin in a wet dressing (poultice) or as a dusting powder. It is used to dry or soften the skin.
Kaolin is also used in laboratory tests that help to diagnose disease.
In manufacturing, kaolin is used in tablet preparation and to filter materials and remove color. Kaolin is also a food additive.
The above submission are general use of the clay but reseaarch have proved that it can be used as cure for columnaris infection in channel catfish.

Columnaris disease, caused by the bacterial pathogen Flavobacterium columnare, continues to be a major problem worldwide in both wild and cultured freshwater finfish. Despite the far-reaching negative impacts of columnaris disease, safe and efficacious preventatives and curatives for this disease remain limited. In this study, we evaluated the potential of kaolin (Al2 Si2 05 (OH)4 ), a type of clay, for the prevention of columnaris disease.

Channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque), fingerlings were experimentally challenged with Flavobacterium columnare in untreated water or with water containing kaolin (1 g L(-1) ). Over the 7-day course of study, kaolin treatment led to significantly (P < 0.001) improved survival (96%) as compared to untreated fish (78% survival). Histological examination of the gills revealed that kaolin-treated fish had substantially less gill damage than untreated controls. Quantitative PCR analysis of gill tissue revealed that kaolin significantly reduced F. columnare adhesion (measured at 1 h post-challenge) and colonization (24 h post-challenge). Incubation of kaolin with F. columnare in vitro demonstrated that kaolin reduced the number of F. columnare cells in culture supernatants, presumably through the formation of physical complexes through adsorption. In summary, kaolin can improve survival, reduce gill pathologies and reduce bacterial attachment to key tissues associated with columnaris disease in channel catfish by binding to F. columnare.

Hello Africans!

Here, we share a first hand experience and tips about general fish farming and its nitty critty especially to African farmers and fish farming enthusiasts…we ‘ll showcase peoples success and their pitfalls in fish farming most especial the Nigerian case, hence we are willing to read comments from other parts of africa and their experiences and we discuss and talk about a way forward. God bless Africa!
Happy blogging!
